Why In-House Craftsmanship Matters

Here’s something most couples never think to ask: after I design my ring, where does it actually get made?
For a surprising number of jewelers — including some well-known ones — the answer is: somewhere else. The design consultation happens in one place; the ring is manufactured by a third-party production facility, often out of state or overseas. The jeweler you worked with may never touch the finished piece.

At Green Lake Jewelry Works, the answer is different. Your ring is designed, engineered, cast, set, and finished by our team, in our Seattle & Bellevue studios, with our bench jewelers working thirty feet from the designers you’ve been meeting with. That’s not a marketing line. It’s the reason our rings are built differently.

Why the Supply Chain of Your Ring Matters

When a ring is manufactured by a third party, the design that arrives is what was communicated in a file — a CAD model, a specification sheet. There’s no conversation mid-build. If the stone is slightly different than anticipated, no one catches it at the setting stage and calls you. If a detail needs adjustment, it gets adjusted according to a specification, not according to your intent.

When your ring is built in-house, the bench jeweler can walk over to your designer’s desk and ask a question. Progress photos are taken not as a customer service courtesy but as a natural part of an open production floor. Problems are caught and solved before they become problems with the finished ring.

The Accountability That Comes with In-House Craftsmanship

There is a particular kind of pride that comes with building something in front of the people who commissioned it. Our bench jewelers know that the couple who designed this ring is going to come back to this studio when it’s ready. They’re going to pick it up, hold it up to the light, and take it home for the rest of their lives.

That accountability shapes every decision. The prong height. The finish on the interior of the band. The symmetry of the pavé. These are details that matter to the craftsperson building the ring because they know they matter to you.

What You Can See That Others Can’t Show You

When you visit our studio, you can watch rings being made. The casting area, the setting benches, the finishing stations — they’re visible. This is deliberate. We believe that transparency in the process builds trust in the product.

We can also show you, at any stage of production, exactly where your ring is. Not a tracking number in a system — a photo of your actual ring, on the bench where it’s being worked on, at whatever stage it’s reached.

What In-House Means for Revisions and Repairs

A ring built in our studio can be serviced in our studio. If you need a prong retipped in ten years, or a stone re-secured after a knock, or the interior engraving refreshed on your anniversary, we have the full file and the institutional knowledge of how the ring was built. We know exactly what metal was used, how the setting was constructed, and what the ring looked like when it left our bench.

A ring built by a third-party manufacturer and serviced years later by a different jeweler carries none of that continuity.

The Question to Ask Before You Commit

“Is this ring built in your studio by your team?”

If the answer is yes, you have something. If the answer involves phrases like “out to production” or “out to our manufacturing partner” — ask more questions.
