30 Years of Custom Design, 25 of Them Online — And Why It Matters for the Ring of a Lifetime

Why in-house craftsmanship beats an outsourced storefront — wherever you are

The custom jewelry industry has changed dramatically in the past decade. A wave of online jewelers has made it possible to design a ring from anywhere — but at Green Lake, we were doing this long before it was a trend. We opened our studio in 1996 and have been online since 2001, running our own purpose-built custom design platform ever since. We were one of the first custom jewelers in the country to offer online custom design at all.

Design No. 204902

Today we offer both. Sit down with us at the bench in person, or work with us entirely online from anywhere in the world — whichever fits how you want to design. We work with remote clients across the US and internationally every day, and they consistently tell us the experience feels just as personal as walking through our door.
But the real distinction in this industry is not online versus in person. It is whether the jeweler you hire actually makes your ring.

In-House vs. Outsourced: The Difference That Actually Matters

Many of the newer online jewelers are, functionally, design and sales storefronts. The design conversation happens with them; the manufacturing happens somewhere else — a third-party or even overseas factory they do not own in most cases. Your ring is made by people you will never interact with.

At Green Lake, our in-house team of over 100 makers design and build custom pieces every day in our own studios. That distinction matters whether you work with us in person or from a thousand miles away. Here is what it buys you.

Eight Reasons Our Online Experience Is Different

1.Your ring is made by our team, here, not outsourced.

We are not a storefront that brokers your project to an outside manufacturer. Your ring is built on our benches, by our jewelers.

2. One team, start to finish.

The people who help you design your ring are in the same building as the people making it. There is no handoff to a separate production company that never heard your conversation.

3. Twenty-five years of refining the online process.

We did not build our remote workflow last year in response to a trend. We have been designing with clients online since 2001, on software we built — and have rebuilt — ourselves. The kinks got worked out a long time ago.

4. One of the first to offer online custom design at all.

In 2001, almost no one was doing true custom design over the web. We are not adapting to something new — we helped establish what online custom design looks like in this industry.

5. Direct access to working bench jewelers.

Our founder is a bench jeweler by trade, and that hands-on expertise runs through the studio. You are not routed through layers of sales staff with no fabrication background.

6. Full accountability.

When design and manufacturing happen under one roof, there is no third party to point to. We own the whole process, and we own the outcome.

7. Faster problem-solving.

If something needs to change mid-project, we are not waiting in a third-party manufacturer’s production queue. Adjustments happen in-house, on our timeline.

8. Open-bench transparency, extended remotely.

Green Lake was built around visible, in-studio craftsmanship. For remote clients, that means real visibility into who is making your ring and how — not just a tracking number.

The Bottom Line

Whether you sit down with us on studio or work with us entirely from afar, your ring is designed and built by the same in-house team, to the same standards, with the same people accountable for it. That is the difference thirty years of doing this — twenty-five of them online — actually makes.
