With our twenty years of experience making jewelry, we have heard a lot of stories from our clients about their jewelry mishaps. We made this list to help make you more familiar with some of the seemingly innocuous activities that can add unnecessary wear and tear, and ways to prevent losing your ring. We design and craft our jewelry to last a lifetime and we want you to make the most of wearing it!

1. Counter Tops
An overly emphatic and gestured kitchen conversation can mean a cracked or chipped stone upon impact with a marble countertop. We’ve seen it happen enough to put on this list!

2. Yoga
Downward Dog is such a great way to stretch out and relax, but also puts a great amount of pressure on your ring and could bend it out of shape. Like other forms of exercise, we recommend taking off your engagement ring when you’re in the mood for Crow Pose.

3. Lakes
A refreshing dip in a lake is the perfect time for a finger to get pruney and a ring to give you the slip.

.

.

4. Weight Lifting
When we carefully form and shape all the tiny details of your ring, we use small metal jewelers tools, so just imagine how quickly a large metal barbell can smoosh them all away!

.

5. Weight loss
Congratulations! Not only are you smaller, your fingers are inevitably smaller too. A temporary plastic ring sizer is the perfect tool to use along your weight loss journey as an incremental adjustment so you don’t end up light on rings.

6. Winter Gloves
With winter temperatures making your hand cold and fingers smaller, a properly-fit ring can suddenly seem loose. Taking a glove off quickly means there’s a 50% chance it’s going to slip off inside, or be flung into the snow!

.

.

7. Rock Climbing
Grabbing onto a rock isn’t a metal-friendly activity. Even though there’s a rock on your hand, it doesn’t mean you should use it to climb other rocks.

.

.

8. Basketball
Smashing a ball against your hand is a great way to squash a ring. It’s also a great way to jam your finger, have it swell, and then have the ring cut off…

9. Painting
You’re going to need professional help getting house paint off a ring. We’re jewelry professionals, so we are adding painting to the list!

.

.

10. Gardening
A quick turn in the garden to make a bouquet can quickly become just a little weeding, a bit of shoveling, and some more intense wheel-barrowing. Give your ring a rest as you have at it with your yard improvements.

11. Beaches
Sand is a great place for rings to hide. That’s why you see so many metal-detecting enthusiasts at the beach!

.

.

12. Honeymoons
People get so excited they totally forget everything we put on this list! (And there’s usually a beach involved…)

.

13. Scrubs
Tying a ring to your pants or putting it in a tiny pocket is a great way to have it slip away. When it’s forgotten in a pocket during washing, it can easily be eaten by the infinite nooks and crannies of your washing machine. For medical professionals, we recommend attaching the ring to a special necklace , carabiner, or lanyard when you need to take it off.

The best way to help protect your ring from getting all bent out of shape?

.

.

Create a safe place for your ring. Always store your ring in the same location whenever you take it off (not on a window sill or above a sink). If you’re like our savvy designers, put it in a container with a lid so it can’t fall out. At the gym, bring a lock. And never, ever, ever, ever leave your jewelry in your car. Now go out there and have fun wearing your brand-new, one-of-a-kind, custom Green Lake designed ring!
