How to Find a Reputable Custom Jeweler.

What to Look for and What to Ask

The short answer: look for a jeweler who builds in-house, let’s you work with the same designer from start to finish, offers a physical wax model, has a substantial and consistent review history, and can show you real photos of work they’ve made — not just work they’ve sourced.

The Questions That Matter

  1. Is the ring designed and built in your own studios?

Many jewelers — including some well-known ones — outsource production to third-party manufacturers or off site company owned factories. The design consultation happens in one place; the ring is built somewhere else. Ask directly: “Is this ring built in your studio by your team?” If the answer involves “our manufacturing partner” or “out to production,” ask more questions.

  1. Will I work with the same designer from start to finish?

At some studios, you meet a salesperson, the design is handed off internally, and you deal with whoever is available for follow-up. At the best custom studios, your designer is your partner, and stays with you from the first consultation through the moment you pick up the finished ring. This matters for quality and for the experience.

  1. Can I see a wax model before the ring is cast?

A physical wax model — in the exact proportions of the finished ring — is the clearest sign that a studio is doing true custom work. It’s also the most valuable step in the process: you can try it on, see how it scales on your hand, and request changes before any precious metal has been poured. This applies even to hand forged & fabricated pieces, as a model that shows the proportions is a valuable tool for both you and the artist to be sure your vision matches.

  1. What does your review history look like — and specifically, what do customers say about the process?

Overall ratings matter, but the content of reviews matters more. Look for reviews that describe the design process, name specific designers, and talk about what the experience felt like — not just whether the ring looked nice. A studio with hundreds of detailed process reviews has demonstrated its consistency across many clients and many years.

  1. Can you show me examples of work similar to what I’m imagining?

A reputable custom jeweler has a portfolio. Ask to see real photos of work in your aesthetic direction (not just CAD or AI renders). If a studio can’t show you relevant examples, that’s a red flag.
