You had a vision. Maybe you typed it into ChatGPT at midnight: “A Victorian style platinum ring with a pear-shaped alexandrite, with feather and flower details.” Maybe you generated a dozen images in Midjourney until one made your heart stop. Maybe you saved a hundred Pinterest photos that all seem to share one quality you can’t quite name.
AI tools have given couples something genuinely new: the ability to visualize a ring that doesn’t exist yet. To describe a feeling and see it rendered in three dimensions. To arrive at a first appointment not with a vague idea, but with a image.
At Green Lake Jewelry Works, we love when couples bring us their AI-generated concepts. Not because AI does our job — it doesn’t — but because it gets us so much closer, so much faster, to what you actually want.
AI image tools are extraordinarily good at capturing mood and style. They can render a vintage Art Deco setting with surprising accuracy, suggest stone shapes you may never have considered, and combine design elements in ways that would take a jeweler hours to sketch. As a starting point for a design conversation, they’re remarkable.
We’ve seen clients walk in with ChatGPT conversations printed out — a back-and-forth where they refined their description over a dozen prompts until the AI rendered something close. Others bring Midjourney or DALL-E images. Some bring a mood board that’s half AI and half Instagram saves. All of it is welcome. All of it is useful.
Here’s what AI doesn’t know: whether that delicate filigree will hold a 1.5-carat oval stone over a lifetime of daily wear. Whether those leaves wrapping the band can actually be cast in platinum at the scale shown. Whether the stone shape you fell in love with will balance with your partner’s hand the way the image suggests.

Here’s why we don’t let AI have the final say at the bench… it doesn’t always get important details right!
AI generates images. It doesn’t understand metallurgy, gemstone physics, or the tolerances of a ring that has to survive decades of real life. A stunning rendering can describe an unwearable ring — and you’d never know until a less experienced jeweler had already built it.
This is where the conversation at Green Lake begins.
When you bring us your AI-generated ideas — whether it’s a single image or a folder of references — our designers do something AI cannot: they read between the lines.
Our designers will ask you: What is it about this image that you love? Is it the stone shape, the metal color, the overall silhouette, the vintage feel, or something about the way light seems to move through it? Often, the answer reveals that what you fell in love with isn’t what you thought it was.
From there, we redraw. We use professional CAD software to create a design that captures everything you loved in the AI image and engineers it into something that will actually be built. You’ll see the CAD rendering. You’ll approve it. Then we create a physical wax model — something you can hold in your hands, slide onto your finger, and look at in real light.
No AI tool gives you that.
