Custom Engagement Ring Design in Seattle: The Green Lake Experience

Design No. 214878

If you’re beginning to look for a custom engagement ring in Seattle or the greater Puget Sound area, you’ll find a range of options — from national online platforms to local studios to chain retailers with “custom” programs. This guide is for couples who want to understand what a fully in-studio custom experience looks like, and whether it’s right for them.

We’re Green Lake Jewelry Works. We’ve been designing and building custom rings in our Seattle studio since 1996 — named the Coolest Store in America by INSTORE Magazine in 2012, with over 2,000 Google reviews for our Seattle & Bellevue studios. This is how our process works.

Step 1: The Consultation — Seattle or Bellevue, or Online

Your first appointment is a conversation. Bring everything you’ve collected: AI-generated images, Pinterest boards, photos of rings you’ve loved, notes on what you don’t want. Bring your budget range. Bring your partner if you’re designing together, or come alone if this is a surprise.

Our designers don’t use a sales script. They ask questions and listen. By the end of an hour, they typically have a clear sense of what you’re looking for — and often a clearer sense than you had when you walked in.

We have studios in Seattle (550 NE Northgate Way) and Bellevue, and we work with clients remotely across the US and internationally. The full design process — including the wax model stage — is available to remote clients, with wax models shipped for your review before production begins.

Step 2: The Design

After your consultation, your designer produces a CAD rendering — a three-dimensional model of your ring that you can view from every angle. This is the stage where you’ll see the design take shape, request adjustments, and begin to understand what the finished ring will look like.

Most designs go through at least one revision at this stage. That’s not a problem — it’s the process working correctly. Your approval moves us to the next step.

Step 3: The Wax Model

This is the step that distinguishes a true custom studio from every other option in the market. We produce a physical wax model of your ring, and you come in to hold it.

The wax model is cast in the exact proportions of the final ring. You can try it on, look at it in light, and see whether the scale and profile feel right on your hand. Most clients at this stage have small refinements — a slightly narrower band, a touch more height in the setting. Some have larger ones. All of them are grateful to have had this moment before the metal was poured.

Step 4: Production

Your ring is cast in metal, set with your chosen stone, finished, polished, and quality-checked — all in our Seattle studio, by our bench jewelers. You’ll receive progress photos as it’s built. Your designer remains your point of contact throughout.
Timelines vary depending on the complexity of the design and our current production volume (we build hundreds of pieces a month). We’ll give you an honest estimate at your consultation and keep you informed throughout.

Step 5: Delivery

You pick up your ring at the studio. Your designer presents it to you. This moment is important — it’s the first time you see the finished piece, and we want you to be there for it, with the person who helped you build it.

We also offer complimentary cleaning and inspection at any point after delivery, and we maintain full production records for any future service or repairs.

What a Custom Ring at Green Lake Costs

Custom engagement rings at Green Lake typically begin around $2,500 and range widely based on stone selection, metal choice, and design complexity. Our designers are experienced at working across a broad range of budgets and will tell you honestly at the consultation what’s achievable in your range.

We don’t pressure. We don’t upsell for its own sake. We design rings we’re proud to put our name on, at prices our clients feel good about.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring in a family stone or heirloom?
Yes, and we love when clients do. Redesigning a ring to incorporate a stone with family history is some of the most meaningful work we do. We’ll evaluate the stone and advise on what designs will showcase it best.

Can I design my partner’s ring as a surprise?
Absolutely. Many of our clients design a surprise ring and bring their partner in after the proposal for resizing and any adjustments. We’re practiced at keeping secrets.

Do you work with lab-grown diamonds?

Yes. We work with natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, and a wide range of colored gemstones. Our designers will walk you through the differences and help you choose what’s right for your priorities and budget.

How long does the process take?
Most custom rings take between six and ten weeks from design approval to delivery. More complex designs may take longer. We recommend starting the process at least three months before your intended proposal date.

What if I’m not in Seattle?

We work with clients across the US and internationally, and a fully remote process is something we do every day — not an exception. Remote clients receive the same design experience, the same CAD process, and the same wax model review (shipped to you) before production begins. Many of our highest-satisfaction clients have never visited the studio in person. If you’re ever in Seattle, we’d love to meet you — but your ring will be just as beautiful either way.
